Guild: Sigils

Where in the real life world do you live?
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

How long have you played EQ?
On and off for six years

What other MMOs have you played?
Auto Assault, DAoC, EQ2, SWG, CoH/CoV, Face of Mankind(Yuck), WoW, and others I do not care to remember.

What type of work do you do?
University undergrad who is also currently working at Guest-Tek Interactive writing software applications. (Mostly web-based)

How long is your typical gaming session when playing EQ?
Four hours

What does a typical EQ day consist of for you?
Guild grouping on small, but challenging quests and hunts. Such as DoD missions, BiC hunting, etc. I focus a lot on single group content, because I find it more challenging that raid content.

What was the race and class of your very first character?
Human Ranger

What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most?
My uncle, when he gave me my first computer, ZX Spectrum 128K and 50 cassette tapes worth of games.

What other hobbies or activities do you take part in, other then playing EverQuest?
DnD, working on game programming techniques, and other more boring and physical things, when I can find the time.

What is your highest level in EQ?
70

What race and class is your main character?
Dark Elf rogue

What do you like the most about the class you have chosen for your main character?
The rogue is an underdog. He cannot buff himself. He cannot solo. He cannot do anything without a group. Believe it or not, it was these glaring weaknesses that attracted me to the rogue because it forced me to join groups to achieve anything. But I was also an underdog that could go places most other people can't. I was the first person in my guild to reach the City of Mist and live, and that was back when I couldn't sneak without crawling along like a snail. I then spent weeks there meeting the people that actually took the time to get there and hunt. The isolation of the area, the rareness of the loot that was dropping and the creepy atmosphere made me realize that I had made the right class choice.

Does your main character worship a deity?
No.

How did you choose your main character's name?
I wanted a name with a K, and a 'th' in it, and so I came up with Kanolth. It is also a name that is so unique that there are only three characters across the entire expanse of EQ that have the name, and I own all three of them.

Which classes in EQ have you NOT played?
Cleric, Warrior, Mage, Enchanter, Beastlord What is your favorite expansion? By far, Ruins of Kunark, back before Luclin came out and introduced those blasted teleportation platforms. Kunark was wild, and untamed, with considerable danger from the nearby Iksar city no less. To actually get some place was an achievement in and of itself. It just seemed so Conanesque as well, and I am a big Conan fan. A lot of thought went into the history, the quests, the layout, and art direction of the zones. It was perfect.

What is your favorite zone?
Sebilis... still Sebilis.

What is your favorite npc?
I think this is because of EQ2 mostly so it might not count, but Boomba the Ogre is the most memorable NPC for me. "I am Boomba, and I sell Pickles!!"

Which expansion do you like the least?
Prophesy of Ro (Love the new Desert of Ro though)

Which zone do you like the least?
The Grey Waste

Which npc do you like the least?
Let me go BIG! I do not like Firiona Vie or Lanys T'Vyl. The chosen of their respective gods? This borrows too much from the Forgotten Realms mythology. Also, this whole war between these two powerful beings is just not something I particularly care about.

What is the most platinum you have ever spent on purchasing a single item for one of your characters?
40K. I never had much platinum, and for good reason. Money is a terrible motivator.

Do you have an item you no longer use but keep around for nostalgic reasons? If so what is it and why do you keep it?
Ragebringer. It was my weapon for three years. It was an achievement that echoes through Kanolth's history time and time again, and it was the object of a lot of roleplay.

What do you like best about EverQuest?
The quests. Some of these quests are just so involving that to actually beat a quest is a massive achievement, and the player genuinely feels it. WoW's quests are so watered down, that they are just a normal part of every session, whereas EQ's quests are incredibly challenging and difficult and most of them require a hell of a lot of work, patience and time. I use to have a file with notes scribbled into them. I lost it now, but it got pretty big.

What do you get out of playing EverQuest?
Satisfaction with the people I play with. I love to experience a release from the pressures of the real world, while I juggle the pressures of the virtual world. I become Kanolth, and it is very liberating to be someone you can never be.

Describe your best experience from playing EverQuest?
Being the only survivor of a failed trip to Old Hate, and spending the next three hours doing a corpse recovery. This was back before SoS, and so I had to rely on my sneak ability to sneak past the see invis creatures. It was a harrowing experience, but the adrenaline I was feeling due to the fact that if I failed an entire guild's corpses would be lost, hooked me onto EQ like nothing else.

Do you run or work for an EverQuest Fan Site?
No.
