Congratulations to the Winners of the Dawn of the Clockworks Contest!

To celebrate the release of EverQuest Secrets of Faydwer, the EverQuest Team hosted the Dawn of the Clockworks contest.

Using building blocks, tinker sets, electronic supplies, and/or other gadgets, EverQuest community engineers had this opportunity to create real-life clockworks to assist Meldrath or Ak'Anon.

Here are the winning submissions:

First Place:

    Gnemesis
    • Submission: Mechanical Mining and Manufacturing Model IV

    • Description: It has two motors in it I got from a dismantled cd-rom drive. The diamond tipped drill bit spins, I machined it from 6061 t6 aluminum on my mini lathe, and the clockwork winding handle has another of the cd-rom's motors in it and it spins as well. The majority of the body was hammered from 18 gauge sheet steel and welded together. The head is spring mounted and bobs like a bobble-head toy. I don't have the means to make a video of it but I could mail it in if required.

Second Place:

    Oriaas Farslayer of The Tribunal
    • Submission: CS-XIX Clockwork Scorpion

    • Description: The Ak'Anon Department of Tinkering often distributes scrolls to help with the construction of clockworks. This is one of them.

    Rouan of The Tribunal
    • Submission: ABC (Anti-Brownie Clockwork)

    • Lore Description: After having his launch betrayed by escaping brownies, Meldrath has had his enchanters tighten their grip on the minds of his enslaved brownies and taken to using them as spies in Ak'Anon and its surrounding areas. To combat this new threat, Ak'Anon's engineers quickly came up with a cheap and effective safeguard to brownie spies, the ABC. ABCs, or Anti-Brownie Clockworks, are made from the parts of defeated Meldrathian clockworks. Lying low to the ground and featuring a "brown-catcher" on the front, no brownie spy hiding in a steam tunnel can evade a group of ABCs herding them to be captured by the local gnomish authorities. Any brownie that tries to escape past the brownie catcher will be met with a wicked blade employed like a scorpion's stinger on the back of the ABC. Seeing as how the brownies are under a spell, this is purely used as a last resort if said brownie has learned sensitive information and is at risk of escaping before help can arrive.

    • Building Description: Using a K'Nex dinosaur set (and its motor) as a base, I used pink insulation foam to build a body light enough to not strain the weak motor. Sadly, the spray paint used on the foam had an adverse effect on it that I had not anticipated and made it look dirtier than I intended.
      • Pictured:
        • Pink insulation foam

        • Spray paint

        • Paper gear template (for wheels)

        • Wood glue

        • K'Nex motor and parts for base

        Not Pictured:
        • Blade for cutting foam

        • Acrylic paint for touching up spray paint job

        • Toothpicks to allow wood glue to do it's work on the connections

        • Small light for the top of the head

        • Thin stiff paper/cardboard for making "brownie catcher"

Third Place:

    Notsileous Soulstalker of Luclin
    • Submission: Constructs Clockwork

    • Description: My clockwork was made from things called constructs that I've had since a kid. It is 44 inches tall, and 23 inches wide shoulder to shoulder. He does not move on his own because he is just too big and I don't have the right stuff to make him move on his own but he does have many moving parts. His head can rotate 360 degrees, his torso can rotate 360 degrees, his arms raise up and down, they bend at the elbows, the wrist rotates 360 degrees and the fingers each have one point of articulation (knuckles.) There is a small motor inside that spins the key on his back. The music in the background is the wave file from devastation.
