Problems Logging in on Patch Day
Written by Community Member Praavus

  1. "The servers show as being up on the Network Status page, but I can't log in."

The servers are quite often reported as being up even DURING the patch. If the Login Server is down/disabled (as is the case during a patch) you will not be able to log in. Please keep in mind that Sony probably needs to actually bring the servers up for a period of time before they allow you to login in order to make sure that there are no catastrophic problems.
  2. "I've downloaded the patch already but I can't log in to the servers."

Just because the downloaded files are ready to be transferred to your computer, it DOES NOT mean that the servers are ready to be played on.
  3. "The new interface sucks. My computer hangs on "Logging into the server. Please wait..." I have to reboot/power down/[CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] to get out of it."

Most of the time, this is not true. If you just hit the [ENTER] key on your keyboard, it will stop trying to "log in." This should enable you to exit normally. Barring this, a simple [Alt]+[F4] (windows shortcut for "Close") usually does the trick.
  4. "I think (or KNOW) the servers are up, but I still can't log in."

This is probably due to the fact that thousands of other people who are just as excited, impatient. or suffering from withdrawal symptoms like you are trying to log in at the same time. The login server can only handle so many people at the same time. Wait a little while and try again.

General Tips:
  • Don't try to log in or complain about not being able to log in if the time scheduled for the patch has not yet elapsed. Odds are, they are still working on the servers.
  • Don't "spam" the login server by repeatedly or rapidly trying to connect to EQ after you either "think" or "know" that the servers are up. This only contributes to the login server congestion and makes it harder for EVERYONE to log in.
  • Be patient. (I know this is hard for a lot of people.) If you can't login 5 milliseconds after you "think" or "know" the servers are up, this does not necessarily mean that there is a problem. Also be aware that sometimes patches run over their initial allotted time.
  • Even if someone posts that they are in the game and that the servers are up (as someone invariably will), you may still want to give it a few minutes before you try and log in. See "4" and "b" above.
